Corry Evans gutted after Defeat
Northern Ireland have been a surprise package in the Euro 2016 qualifying up until now.
They had managed to win every match, which had given them a great opportunity to reach the Euro 2016 finals in France. However, a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Romania has not only seen them surrender the 100% record but also the top spot in the group. Romania have overtaken them in the group as a result of this victory and are now one point clear at the top. Even though the advantages not very significant, midfielder Corry Evans said that he is gutted after the defeat.
After having managed to 3 consecutive victories in the qualification campaign that started in September, it looked like the game was heading into a goalless draw. Both teams failed to take their chances until the 74th minute when Papp opened the scoring. It did not take long for Romania to establish a firm advantage in the match after Papp completed his brace five minutes later. The madness of these five minutes has seen Northern Ireland face an uphill battle in the coming matches in order to retain their position in the table. They do not have a significant advantage compared to Hungary, who are two points below them. Only the top two teams qualify to the competition automatically.
“Everybody in the dressing room was absolutely gutted and exhausted. We gave our all but it just wasn’t good enough against the best team in the group.Yes, they put us under a lot of pressure and we were forced on the back foot for large parts of the match, but I honestly believed we were going to hold out for draw and a great point. All the players are shattered. It’s terrible when you put so much effort in and don’t come away with anything. We’re all very disappointed,” said Evans.
